A workshop discussion at Student Success US considered the challenges that hinder retention and completion of students beyond their first year. This fall, the University of Miami introduced a new virtual reality tool into a first-year course. The initiative is targeted toward retention and engagement of students, as well as improving their feelings of belonging. Just before 5 p.m., Montgomery County police officers responded to Spiceberry Circle where they found the teen suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital with what was described as “non-life-threatening injuries,” according to authorities.
“A group was drinking and talking about politics when the shooting suspect went to a vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and began shooting,” Vega said. Police in Miami are investigating after officials said three women were shot during an argument over politics early Wednesday, the day after Election Day. The ages of the victims were not released, but we do know that two of the victims were men and one was a woman. But even at smaller schools, kids were stuck waiting — leaving students and parents with more than the usual first-day nerves. Legislation going into effect this school year will bring changes to California campuses. One new law requires elementary schools to offer free menstrual products in some bathrooms and another requires that all students, beginning in first grade, learn about climate change. During this first couple of months during COVID, there was much more of this activity than there was before that. Teacher work motivation is another critical form of energy that drives educators’ effort in their work.
I believe that this shift requires more than just methodological adjustments; it demands a deeper transformation in how we understand and engage with educational practice and practitioners. First, while the continuous improvement movement aims to create meaningful change solving urgent practical problems in daily educational practice, I wonder, what do we mean by “practice”? It refers to the emergent reality that arises from daily interactions where social structure and individual agency intersect (Bourdieu, 2007; Spillane, 2009). In their work there is no question practitioners need guidance and structured processes, but they also must rely on intuition, improvisation, and experiential learning—factors that can sometimes elude traditional research (Schön, 1987). To foster effective change, I believe, we need to more deeply understand the nature of practice itself.
More immigrant students mean increased funding for schools, which may be used to add social and academic support or other assistance that could help English learners. The arrival of new immigrant students in schools boosts the academic performance of English learners and doesn’t diminish the academic standing of their English-speaking peers, according to a RAND study reported on by The 74. Air quality in Oxnard and Camarillo reached hazardous levels Thursday afternoon, the Daily News reported based on an alert from the Ventura County Air Pollution Central District. Such levels could cause health issues, such as asthma attacks, bronchitis and other respiratory conditions for people, regardless if they have preexisting conditions or not. The Ventura County Mountain fire that has burned 14,500 acres prompted dozens of schools and districts to close Thursday; many of them remained closed Friday due to the dangerous air quality caused by the fire, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.
She laid out a plan to help practitioners start by conducting their own research to build curiosity for evidence, and to make research relevant not by translating the work of others but by studying oneself. Building from this experience, practitioners could then gradually develop the skills and dispositions to seek, use, and conduct rigorous research. Organizational research says that in institutions like schools very strong reforms don’t take place without some crisis. Before COVID, some teachers would give reasons why they couldn’t use technology, but they knew and I knew that the real reason was because they did not have the skills and did not want to develop them. But now after COVID, all our teachers have good enough skills with ICT-based pedagogy, and they can make pedagogicaldecisions about whether or not to use technology.
The sweeping conservative blueprint for a second Trump administration would dismantle the Education Department, privatize student loans and end all ongoing Title IX investigations. A new Inside Higher Ed/Generation Lab survey shows Harris leading nationally by 38 points, with around a third of students reporting they are more likely to cast a ballot because she’s top of the ticket. Employees and students must vote off campus in November for the first time in years. Voting groups say such changes are a common, albeit subtle, form of voter suppression. Every election cycle sparks hope, fear and—eventually—change in higher education. But in the contest between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, the stakes feel particularly high, given the debates raging over cost, campus free speech, DEI and student protests, among others. Check out Inside Higher Ed’s coverage of the relevant issues and moments that shaped the 2024 race to the White House. Programs are required to have one pedagogical leader, someone with a multiyear college degree or comparable education, per seven children under the age of 3, and one per 14 children older than that. Each leader is supported by two other teachers, who often have less education. For children under age 3, there may be no more than three children for each staff member, and there is a maximum of six children per staff for older children. In some states, as many as 12 2-year-olds are assigned to one teacher, who is subject to far fewer training requirements than a peer in Norway. Norwegian children are guaranteed a spot in a kindergarten after they turn 1, around the time many parents’ paid leave ends. All kindergartens are governed by the same framework and requirements, designed to protect the sanctity of the early years. If parents don’t send their children to child care, they receive financial assistance to keep them at home.
